You get a shiver in the dark
It's raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie double four time
You feel alright when you hear that music ring

You step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Too much competition too many other places
But not too many horns can make that sound

You check out Guitar George he knows all the chords
Mind he's strictly rhythm he doesn't
want to make it cry or sing
And an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing

And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene
He's got a daytime job he's doing alright
He can play honky tonk just like anything
Saving it up for friday night
With the Sultans,

And a crowd of young boys they're
fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown
Baggies and their platform soles
The don't give a damn about any
trumpet playing band
It ain't what they call rock and roll

절대 빈곤이란 뜻의 Dire straits는 영화 '토요일밤의 열기'와
그룹 비지스의 연합공격으로 로큰롤이 힘을 못 쓰고 디스코가
득세하던 때에 구식음악을 들고 홀연히 나타난 그룹이다.
70년대 후반, 영국 그룹 다이어 스트레이츠(Dire Straits)는
이렇게 주류에 휩쓸리지 않고 자신들만의 음악을 고수해왔다.

1977년에 마크 노플러와 데이비드 노플러(David Knopfler, 기타)
형제가 주축이 되어 마크의 친구 존 일슬리(John Illsley, 베이스)와
함께 그룹을 결성한 이들은 런던 근교에서 연주를 했지만 어쩔땐
멤버수보다 적은 관객들 앞에서도 공연을 했다는 정말 밴드이름스러운
생활을 하다 데뷔곡인Sultans of swing 으로 성공적인 데뷔를 하고
85년도에 나온 Brother in arms 앨범으로 인해 세계적인 그룹이 되었다.
