아바(ABBA)는 1972년부터 1982년까지 활동했던 스웨덴의 남녀 혼성 4인조 팝/댄스 그룹이다.
ABBA는 스칸디나비아 출신중에 역대 가장 유명하고 성공적인 활동을 했던 4인조 팝그룹이며,
1970년대 중반부터 1980년대 초반까지 세계적으로 상위차트에 올랐다.
'ABBA'라는 이름은 네 구성원(Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Fältskog)의 머릿글자를 딴 것이다.
그들의 팝음악은 라디오에서 고정적으로 방송되고 있으며, ABBA의 앨범은 지금까지 3억7천만장 이상이 팔렸다.
그들은 영어권 국가들(영국, 미국, 캐나다, 아일랜드, 호주, 뉴질랜드 등)의 차트에서 꾸준히 상위그룹에 랭크된 최초의 유럽출신 팀이었다.
그 놀라운 성공은 다른 유럽국가의 가수들에게 영향을 미치게 되었다.
ABBA 는 북구의 음악을 세계적인 주류적 음악계에 소개했으며 힙합 장르과 같은 정도의 독특한 순수 대중음악을 완성시켰다.
작곡가 겸 가수인 베니 안데르손과 비요른 울바에우스는 악보나 종이에 기보를 할 줄 몰랐고 오직 아그네사 펠트스코크만이 할 수 있었다.
(1981년 Dick Cavett 과의 인터뷰에서 밝혔다.)
그들이 사용한 악기들은 실험적이었으며 즉흥적이었고 또는 스튜디오에서 반주녹음에 노래를 하기도 했다.
이런 제약은 훗날 맘마미아 뮤지컬을 제작하는데에도 영향을 미쳤는데,
먼저 음악이 완성되고 나서 다른 음악가들이 참여한 후 앉아서 음악을 듣고 악보에 기보를 하고 가사를 추가하는 식으로 이루어졌다.
이는 베니와 비요른이 후반 작업을 위해서 6개월 이상이 소요되었다.
작곡가들 또한 베니와 비요른이 음원을 먼저 만들고 나서 후에 가사를 추가했었다고 말하였다.
